Treating Acne Without Side Effects

Treating Acne Without Side Effects
By: Davina Joy

There are many acne treatments available either over the counter or by prescription. Potentially there is a risk of side effects from all of these. The worst being those of isotretinoin based products which include the risk of birth defects, depression and suicide. Most worrying is recent reports that the side effects may continue after the treatment has stopped. However, many people could treat their acne without taking these risks.

Treating and Preventing Acne Holistically
Acne can be treated and prevented safely naturally. A good starting point is a regular skincare routine using natural products manufactured with sensitive skin in mind. Although initially it would seem a good idea to use harsh face washes that strip the sebum from the skin, in reality this often results in the sebaceous gland overcompensating and generating even more sebum. By using gentle, natural skincare products we can clean the pores without upsetting the balance of sebum production. Many natural products also contain mild antibacterial ingredients that are an added bonus. A good skincare routine will include washing, toning and moisturising the skin on your face daily and then using a mask to draw out impurities once or twice a week.

Visit http://www.pureskincare.co.uk/acatalog/Acne.html for selections of products that can be used.

Mild and Moderate Acne
Clinical studies show that blue light and red light, working at specific wavelengths, act together in clearing mild to moderate acne. The blue light has an antibacterial effect whilst the red light acts as an effective anti-inflammatory.*9 *10 This technology is now available for home use with the Beauty Skin light box. Used for just 15 minutes a day, the Beauty Skin offers a safe effective treatment for acne that has been shown to produce results in just 4 weeks.

Diet and Acne
Contrary to popular belief, there is evidence linking our diets to acne.

There are people who refute the link, but they cite studies that have involved diets only maintained for seven days. Few acne treatments, conventional or otherwise, would be entirely successful in that short period of time. Indeed research*1 with people suffering from acne has shown that a diet needs to be maintained for six weeks before the body shows the required increase in vitamins levels to help acne.

Further research shows the blood analysed from patients with severe acne has considerably worse levels of vitamins A and E than blood analysed from patients with mild acne*3. This seems to suggest a clear link between deficiency in those vitamins and acne. Thus eating foods high in those nutrients would be beneficial. Minerals are also very important, research has shown both Zinc*5, and selenium*6 are beneficial in helping to reduce acne.

The best method of increasing intake of these vitamins and minerals is via a diet high in vegetables and fruit which lasts at least 6 weeks. A good way to ensure a high intake of these vitamins is to include combinations of freshly juiced blackberries, kiwi fruit, watercress, Swiss chard, cranberries, mango, apricots for vitamin E:
and broccoli, spinach, kale, carrots, Green lettuce, spinach, watercress, Apricots, peaches, mango, loquats, passion fruit, grapefruit for vitamin A. Please note that it is possible to have too much vitamin A, see notice at the end of the article. Moderation is the key!

If there is evidence concerning the foods we should be eating, what evidence is there concerning the foods we should avoid? There is evidence linking milk consumption and acne*2 so removing or at least reducing milk from your diet would be wise. There also seems to be evidence, although only empirical, that links refined carbohydrates, sugars and acne. Although scientists and doctors have yet to establish the exact nature of the link, it is believed be due to the body requiring more chromium to deal with the high blood sugar caused by these food types. This is based on studies that found people with unstable blood sugar levels suffered a high incidence of acne, but when chromium supplements were given the acne rapidly improved *7.

We do know and accept that there are some countries whose populations have diets consisting of fresh fruit, vegetables, lean meats and fish, and are generally free of acne*4. We also know that when these people move to a country whose diet is high in processed foods, dairy and refined sugars, many begin to suffer from acne. Many people dismiss this as only empirical evidence but if you want to effectively treat acne the correlation would be an important point to note and incorporate into your daily diet.

Conclusion
So acne can be treated, and more importantly prevented, naturally without risks of the side effects that many of the conventional drugs incur. A gentle skin care routine and a diet low in processed food and high in unprocessed food for at least 6 weeks should see a vast improvement in your acne and general skin condition. For more stubborn cases, or faster results, combine the routine with Beauty Skin treatments for the ultimate acne free skin care routine.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Vitamin A in doses of 25,000iu or higher can be extremely dangerous.. As a guide there is around 15,500IU/100g of Vitamin A in Kale and 16,812 IU/100g in carrots. Moderation is the key.

Face packs

These tend to draw metabolic by-products (toxins) to the skin surface. They also tone the skin and stimulate circulation. Below some suggestions for face packs. You can improvise with similar ingredients from your kitchen.

To get the full benefit from a face pack, apply it then lie down with feet up for 10-15 minutes; do not put the pack around the eyes but cover them with used cold tea bags or slices of cucumber.

For Oily Skin

Apply just on oily patches such as around the nose and chin

- Almond meal with beaten egg white

- Linseed meal with apple cider vinegar or lemon juice

- Finely ground oatmeal mixed to a paste with yogurt or tepid milk

- Polenta mixed into buttermilk

For Dry Skin

- Mashed avocado

- Castor oil with some almond meal ( castor oil has a “drawing’ effect)

Making Your Own Cosmetics

Commercial cosmetics are usually expensive and contain many different substances – any of which might cause an allergic reaction. Here are some relatively simple and inexpensive suggestions for making your own skin products. Generally, these cause few adverse reactions and at least you know all the contents if you’ve found it necessary to avoid a particular ingredient.

Cleaning the face

Olive Oil

Olive Oil removes eye makeup as well as being a cleanser. Tissue off, then wash the face with warm water. Almond, linseed or any edible oil may be used in the same way but don’t let the oil get in your eyes.

Buttermilk

Buttermilk is especially refreshing. Use in the same way as you would any cleanser. Keep refrigerated.

Steam Facial

Make string tea using chamomile flowers, cover and let it stand a few minutes. Take the lid off and hold your face about 30 cm from the pot with a large towel over your head.. Do this for 3-4 minutes; then repeat. To finish, splash your face with cold water or mineral water.

Other herbs can be used for this purpose, for example thyme, rosemary, lavender, lemon grass. Use the leaves and flowers of these.

Dietary Advice

A number of skin problems have a nervous origin or are connected with allergies. In my own clinical experience, I find that itching skin is commonly related to coffee, oranges and grains, especially bran.

The problem of allergies is very complex and if you suspect that allergies may be the cause of you acne, I would suggest visiting your natural practioner to determine and to treat it. As a general rule try to avoid all refined, processed, packaged, canned, bottled and frozen food and allow minimal intake of fats, oils, meat, nuts and seeds.

One of the best skin cleansing juices can be taken two times a day – it’s a mixture of juiced celery, carrot and green bean with a little parsley or watercress added. This juice mixture works as cleanser, removing toxins from the body. Also adding fresh sprouts, especially alfalfa and fenugreek to your salads or sandwiches will speed up cleansing process.

Include a wide variety of raw and steamed vegetables and raw fruit in your meals. Have a high-fibre diet with a range of whole grains including buckwheat, millet, oats, brown rice and rye, instead of having wheat everyday. Use lentils and dried beans and have fish as a good protein choice.

If you are vegan or vegetarian, seek professional advice to ensure you are getting adequate protein and other essential nutrients in your diet.

Take one capsule or one teaspoon of Lecithin per day - It is needed by every cell in the body and is a key building block of cell membranes. Lecithin protects cells from oxidation and helps with regeneration and renewal of skin cells.

Soaps

Unless otherwise indicated by the manufacturer, soaps are alkaline.

Ideally, the skin should be slightly acidic so if you have a skin problem it may be wise not to use any soap for a trial period of about four weeks. If the problem clears in that time it may be that you have an allergy to something in the particular soap you have been using, or your skin does not return to the desired acid level after washing and so this leads to the bacterial imbalance. Using diluted apple cider vinegar or diluted fresh lemon juice as external skin toners will help restore the acid balance.

You can now buy soaps that pH (acid) balanced or neutral. Consider trying natural Goats Milk soap or Olive Oil soap from your health food store.

Some alternatives to soap are –
Sorbolene cream – apply, gently rub in with water, then rinse off (this can also be used for shaving)
Any edible oil – macadamia, almond, avocado, etc.. – apply, tissue off, then splash skin with warm water
Rolled Oats – place in a stocking with the top tied, let hot water run on it, allow to cool; splash on face or use as a bath

Friday

For awhile now, it’s been noticed that food and environmental allergies or sensitivities can be impediment to a healthy skin. Medical science also discovered a link between an intestinal wall and sensitivities. Fragments or substances that should stay in the intestines and be excreted can end up in the bloodstream, joints and other organs. Some of those “toxic fragments” even resemble parts of our body structure or microorganisms. Considering all the truly unnatural chemicals in our food and environment, it’s hardly surprising that body may become confused and many skin problems may be a result of such toxic fragments.

If your skin problem is obstinate, I’d suggest a “full-on naturopathic” treatment of a short fast or special diet, avoidance of all chemicals (within reason), special baths, whole foods and a month or two of high-dose, quality Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacteria supplements. Then you may be more responsive to remedies.

Saturday

I am hopping that you will be encouraged to take an active interest in your health but I am also relying on your common sense. For example, when using external applications, try remedy on a small test patch first, under the arms being particularly sensitive area. Serious skin diseases and infections should be professionally diagnosed and treated.

Any of the natural remedies may well suit you, or you might prefer to get confirmation from your practitioner that one or more may be the most appropriate for your particular case. Generally, natural practitioners use herbal formulas, plus a supplement, and invariably will suggest dietary and lifestyle improvements.

Friday

Treatment Time

There are hundreds of skin diseases, many of them being difficult to diagnose and treat, and, frequently, a remedy that works for one person will not be effective for another.

Certain conditions do not need treatment, apart from soothing or moisturizing cream, but require the removal of an irritant. A number of skin problems are worsened by stress.

When treating skin problems, you need to have some patience, because improvement is rarely dramatic, and I would recommend continuing with the treatment for a reasonable period following the appearance of the lesions. Where skin condition has persisted for many years, a rough guide to treatment time is one month for every year suffered. I use word suffered because we need to be reminded of the embarrassment, poor self-image and sometimes physical restrictions and pain brought about by skin conditions.

Thursday

Skin - your biggest organ

The skin is not just a covering of the body; it is an organ supplied by nerves, blood and lymph. It shares in the role of elimination and so is related to the kidneys, lungs, liver and bowels. A problem in one of those organs is frequently reflected in the others. This is why some skin problems are not helped by external applications. For example, if the kidneys are not filtering the blood effectively, then this places an additional burden on the skin’s eliminative function and the result may be skin eruptions.

My recommendation is to do something at the first sign of any skin problem because a relatively minor problem can spread and intensify. See if you can relate the outbreak to a particular activity or food, perhaps something different in the diet, or something in excess. Were you exposed to a particular plant, chemical or drug? Did you use a different washing powder, wear something new, have too much exposure to the sun or came in contact with a possible infection?

Sunlight is healthy and necessary but a little is good and a lot harmful, so for the sake of your skin avoid sunbathing and working in strong sunlight without protection
